If you’re a non-teacher, you’re probably thinking, “what the heck are CVC words?”

Before you Google it, I’ll tell you.

CVC words are three-letter words that begin with a consonant, have a vowel in the middle, and end with a consonant.

Words like, bed, bad, bat, bop, bam, big, and bin are examples of CVC words.

This printable features CVC words that are related to Thanksgiving. Making them relevant for this time of year.

CVC Thanksgiving phonics worksheets

In my letter I letter recognition article that comes with a free 5-page letter I packet, I note that teaching short vowels first is a good idea.

Essentially, kids will start to come across CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words more frequently when they start learning to read.

Kids will also have an easier time encoding (learning to spell) CVC words because short vowel words have a more consistent sound than other words.

Thanksgiving short vowel worksheets

These no-prep worksheets were designed to be printed on 8.5 x 11″ printer paper.

Each worksheet focuses on short vowels, but with different tasks to add variety.

free short vowels printable word search

The first worksheet is a CVC word search. Kids will first find all the letters in the word bank in the word search. There are six CVC words total:

  • pan
  • mug
  • jug
  • jam
  • hat
  • cup

Once all the words are found in the word search, kids will write the CVC word below the matching picture.

Kids should also use the word bank if they struggle to spell a word. But they’ll need to combine that with their phonics skills in order to learn how letters sound and blend when put together. This will help them become better spellers in the long run.

Free short a CVC worksheet

The second worksheet combines math and literacy! It focuses on four short a words:

  • hat
  • mat
  • jam
  • pan

The words are printed in different fonts, which helps to develop visual discrimination skills.

First kids will color the words in the word box by using the color code provided. As they find each word, they’ll cross it off and color in a square in the graph.

So they are working on their decoding and graphing skills at the same time!

Lastly, kids will answer the three questions at the bottom of the page. This gives them the opportunity to analyze the information on their graph and make comparisons.
