I love learning about the rich cultures that this world has and their histories.

As an art history major in college, I was (and still am) fascinated by the beautiful images and artworks that different cultures create and value all over the world.

The rangoli is a spectacular piece of artwork that is created for a very special event – Diwali or Deepawali.

Diwali is a five-day religious festival in India that celebrates light over darkness, good over evil.

It also celebrates the strong bond and connection between siblings.

What is a Diwali rangoli?

Diwali is a 5-day Hindu festival that starts at the end of October. The nights light up with diyas, candles, lanterns, fireworks, and rangoli designs.

Rangolis are colorful artworks made on the floor next to the entrance of homes to welcome guests.

They are made with colorful rice, flower petals, flour or colored sand.

In the above image, in the center of the rangoli are beautiful diyas. Diyas are are cup-shaped lamps made of baked clay and filled with oil.

A great video to introduce your kids to Diwali is this one from National Geographic. I love the vivid imagery and the real world examples.

Another great video is this one from Kutuki. It is an adorable, easy-to-understand, and well-animated overview of Diwali for kids.

Like all of our printables, it’s designed to be printed on 8.5 x 11″ letter size paper. I recommend using a thicker paper, like cardstock, for these Q-tip painting art activities. Cardstock is more durable and provides a smooth painting surface.

Prepping for this activity is simple! All you need is this printable, some Q-tips, and washable paint.

If it’s the first time your kids are Q-tip painting, make sure you model how it’s done: dip a Q-tip into a paint color of your choice and then dab the Q-tip onto the circles on the image.

Your kids will continue to dab until all the circles have been painted.

Challenge them to mix colors to come up with interesting color combinations.
