Back to school activity

School is fun Q-tip painting activity

Back to school is a time filled with a mixture of emotions for our kids. Joy, nervousness, anticipation, and excitement just to name a few.

No matter how your kid is feeling at the beginning of the school year, a positive affirmation and some creative time will help them settle any butterflies in their tummies and put them in a positive mindset for what’s to come.

This art activity is a whole lot of fun and works in many different settings, including your home, school, daycare, and library. I love how it gets kids to work on their fine motor skills without them even knowing!

What is Q-tip painting?

Dot Q-tip painting is a super fun and creative fine motor art activity for kids. Kids will use a Q-tip to dot paint the circles in the image provided.

Here’s an example of Lucia Q-tip painting some cinco de mayo printables.

Young girl Q-tip painting

You can use any paint for Q-tip painting, but I find that Crayola’s washable paint works really well for these projects. Finger paints also work well.

The dotting motion of working with a Q-tip is great for strengthening eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills.

But don’t worry if you don’t happen to have any Q-tips on hand. Although it’s really fun to paint with Q-tips, you can improvise and have your kid use their fingers, a small paint brush, crayons, markers, or colored pencils to complete this activity.

What materials do I need to complete this project?

Q-tips and paints

This art project is very easy to set up. You really only need three materials:

I recommend the following items if you want to minimize cleanup and keep things organized:

  • Kids apron (great for young kids aged 2-6)
  • Paint palette (durable plastic and easy storage)
  • Wipes or paper towels

School is fun Q-tip painting printable

This printable is features an adorable image of a wise student owl raising its wing (hand) while sitting at their school desk. At the top of the sheet is a positive phrase that says, “School is fun!”

This printable is designed to be printed on standard 8.5 x 11″ piece of paper. Regular printer paper is fine, but cardstock is a better choice. It’s thicker than regular printer paper and provides a nice “canvas” for painting. If you’re using cardstock you shouldn’t have any problems with the paint bleeding through the paper.

If your child has never done a dot Q-tip painting, it’s a good idea to show them how to complete the painting by using the Q-tip as a painting tool. Demonstrate by picking up a Q-tip, dipping it in paint, and stamping (or dabbing) a few circles.

The activity is complete when all the circles have been stamped.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • Every child goes at their own pace. Use this activity to help your child explore their creative side. Let them choose the colors that please them even if they are not “realistic.”
  • Depending on your child’s age, this activity may get a bit messy. And that’s OK! Make sure you’ve demonstrated how to use the painting tools and guide them at first. The hand-over-hand technique (placing your hand over theirs, while they hold onto the Q-tip) is a good way to get started.
